ATNARKO
RETREAT ON CHARLOTTE LAKE
Hiking
at Atnarko Lodge
Limber
up your tired bones after hours of traveling.
Right from the lodge there are a few easy hikes starting with:
The walk to the so called "Public Beach" takes about 45 minutes
to reach the main lake with a phenomenal view into the Coast
Mountains. It's an easy walk on a great trail through the
forest. The beach itself is a few hundred meters long with
tons of stones in all kinds of colors and shapes. On a windy
day it is like standing somewhere on an Ocean shore. The water
is turquoise blue and really refreshing after the walk.
Or
take the walk up the hill, follow Engadin Rd. take the first
turn off to the right and follow the trail. The one advantage
of the logging in our area is that you have great views. You
are able to see Charlotte Lake with one big and the few smaller
islands and you'll see where all the water flows out toward
Little and Baby Charlotte Lakes (eventually into Lonesome
Lake and the Bella Coola Valley). And you have an unobstructed
view into the Coast Mountains which include Trumpeter Mountain,
Pauline's Mountain, and Cowboy Mountain to name just a few.
You will need at least an hour for this walk in order to fully
enjoy the scenery.
Another
walk takes you through the forest to a little secret place
on the shore of Smith Bay, where you can enjoy our great sunsets.
This little tour is about a 45 minute walk. But don't rush,
it is a great place just to be with and enjoy nature.
The
alpine south of Charlotte Lake is a protected alpine area
(Charlotte Alplands Protected Area). That means it is not
a Provincial Park but it is protected to a certain degree.
Many lakes, rivers and hikes are in this area and worthwhile
exploring. The mountain peaks are above the tree line, which
means as soon as you get up there you have an unforgettable
view over the Chilcotin Plateau. Many alpine flowers are in
bloom in the summer months which is another special treat
for your eyes: Clear blue sky, snow on the glaciers and flowers
in all colors of the rainbow will greet you here..
We
are happy to help you plan your hikes into the backcountry.
It is a great area to hike in but be aware there are wild
animals living in it. So it is important to be Bear aware.

If you would feel better having a local guide with you to
explore the backcountry, that is no problem. Just contact
us, and we will organize a hiking guide for you that will
take you to the greatest places in our area.
Our region is so huge that on your own you can reach only
a little part of the great wilderness around Charlotte Lake
in a day. But with a floatplane, the mountains are not as
steep as they look. We would be happy to book a plane for
you so that you have the opportunity to go deep into the backcountry.
You'll get two great activities at once: Enjoy the area like
a bird and then go hiking. The floatplane drops you off on
a lake and will pick you up somewhere else. Enjoy the backcountry
and in the evening the amenities of our lodge.
